.history.

Lord Drake Laurente married young, to a subdued, submissive, beautiful daughter of a neighbouring House. All their marriage lacked in passion, it made up for in politics and aethestics, and they were expected to produce beautiful heirs who would do the history of House Laurente proud. Lady Laurente became with child quickly, and gave birth to a daughter. Proud of the birth, but still hoping for a son, they continued to procreate, again and again, over and over and over and over. Daughter after daughter after daughter came forth, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve, each more beautiful than the last, but there was no son to be seen. Lady Laurente died giving birth to their thirteenth daughter, who was also lost.

Drake Laurente was now in his late fourties, but was still under considerable pressure to remarry and create that desperately sought after male heir. Always a dutiful man, he conceded, and wed Gillian.

Lady Gillian was young, vivacious, spoiled, and shallow, a younger daughter of a lesser House chosen for her looks (and her large hips and breasts; Lord Laurente was taking no chances.) Her first pregnancy miscarried, her second ended in a stillbirth, and then for years there was no result ... until, finally, Gillian gave birth to a healthy, large, strong baby boy. Drake took enough time to inspect the child and name him Lucas, before completely withdrawing for his life.

Gillian saw fit to more than make up for him.

While she had completely ignored her predessecor's daughters, girls as obeidient, quiet, and invisible as they were lovely, her Lucas -- or Lukey, as she immediately took to calling him -- became the entirety of her world. She never spent a second away from his side, picking out all his clothes, sitting in on all his lessons, brushing his hair in the morning and before bed, giving him every single thing he ever asked for. Lukey grew up expecting this, and accepting it as part of his lifestyle. His father and sisters were shadowed, unknown figures standing just at the edge of his vision, but his mother was always before him, elbow deep in every imaginable aspect of his life.

Understandably, as a result, Lukey quickly became a little spoiled. ...Very spoiled. Incredibly spoiled. He was very good-looking, and his mother did teach him basic charm, and he had a sort of natural charisma, but very quickly after the good first impression wore off, nearly everyone Lukey met developed a very, very unpleasant opinion of him. If Lukey ever noticed his inability to make friends, he never seemed bothered by it, especially since the superiority Gillian had trained into him made him actually pretty happy when others started putting difference between them.

However, the other results of Gillian's hands in his life, Lukey did mind. He became frustrated and stifled by her need to do everything for him, and resented her desire to make all his choices for him. But at the same time, he relied on her doing all those things, as he'd never been taught to do them on his own. All attempts to put distance between them were short-lived and half-hearted; Lukey's own subconcious need for Gillian's meddling thwarted his breaks for independance.

He continued to grow completely beneath her thumb, never becoming close with anyone else, barely learning about his future responsibilities, nothing ever changing: Lady Gillian's treasured living doll.

Then, on his 19th name day, the testers came.

Everthorne provided a very unique oppurtunity for Lukey. It was a way to remove his mother's influence from his life without hurting her. It was a way to have his father notice his existance. Plus, the idea of learning how to use magic was pretty damn cool.

With every intention of turning over a new leaf and becoming his own person, Lukey decided that everyone who he was introduced to henceforth would know him as Luke.

(Of course, seeing as that was the only resolution for change he made, the odds of acheiving this sketchy goal aren't as high as he would like to think.)

.beyond everthorne.

Luke was expelled only one week into his term at Everthorne Academy, for violating curfew to spent time with a fellow student. He was immediately sent packing back to his home, where Lady Gillian was thrilled to see him, and he became her Lukey once more.

Or, at least, that's what she would have liked to have happened. In reality, Luke's short time away from Gillian hadn't slaked his thirst to be his own man, and had in fact only aggravated the situation. Grotesquely. Instead of having his rebellion away from his home and his mother, Luke has attempted to have it right before her, but with Gillian blocking him -- panicked at the possibility of losing her little baby -- at every turn, their frustrating, tireless dance has extended for the better part of a year.

Luke has yet to truly realize that despite his increasingly more dramatic attempts to "liberate himself" (aka, rebel), he completely relies on his mother. At the end of the day, she still tucks him into bed, she still brushes his hair, and whenever he needs her, she is always thrilled to be there. His rebellions are inconsequential and change nothing, because there is nothing at stake. Luke is simply playing in a sandbox next to the one he was brought up in, and still somehow thinks he's left the playground.

.personality.

Luke is shallow, spoiled, selfish, and conceited. He was raised under the impression that he is the single most important person in the entire world, and he operates on the unshakable confidence that that belief is one hundred percent true. Everyone else, everything else, just exists in his shadow, or to please him.

Of course, he doesn't introduce himself with a script informing people of that, so it takes them some time to figure it out. On the surface, Luke is a joking, playful, funny, charming smartarse, enjoying bantering with men and flattering women. He finds socialization fun, but it's a selfish thing, to him, a personal hobby rather than a means to reach out to others or establish any sorts of bonds.

Luke has never been taught any work ethic, having never been told slacking off was bad -- in fact, he's never been corrected for anything, really. He's a procrastinator who doesn't see the use of work, the more difficult, the more useless, and thanks to his mother's praise, thinks he's smart enough to get anywhere he wants without any effort. He's such a wonderful, smart boy, after all.

While he'll say that he resents Gillian's role in his life, Luke can barely function without her. Just getting to Everthorne alive as been a trial, how is he supposed to pick out clothes, know what to say, know what to expect, know where to go? Who is going to talk to him about his day, bribe his teachers, brush his hair, tell him who is and isn't worth his time? The fact is, Luke hasn't the first inkling of how to run his own life, from making long term goals to deciding when to go to bed.

.appearance.

Luke is tall, auburn-haired, and handsome. Thanks to an uncanny metabolism and a love for casual riding and tennis, he's also very well built, despite terrible eating habits.

.miscalleneous.

(Luke is pbed by the male wizard from ragnarok online, which the player claims no ownership of, for [info]everthorne)
